Meeting Summary
Composed by: Lydell Manning
The presentation was given by
Tim Sievers, of Highland Community College in Freeport, IL.

It was interesting how this topic was presented. He used the movie, "It's a Wonderful Life" as a media to reveal the key points of Servant Leadership.

Background Servant Leadership was developed by Robert Greenleaf. Worked for ATT for 38 years, retiring in 1964 as VP of Management Research. Founded the Center for Applied Ethics, which was renamed the Robert K. Greenleaf Center in 1985.

Definition of Servant Leadership Serve first, then Lead Service to others, internally and externally, is the first priority. This will enable you to extend your leadership and influence.

Key Elements of Servant Leadership Listening receptively to what others have to say. Acceptance of others and having empathy for them. Foresight and intuition. Awareness and perception. Having highly developed powers of persuasion. An ability to conceptualize and communicate concepts. An ability to exert a healing influence upon individuals and institutions. Building community in the workplace. Practicing the art of contemplation. Recognition that servant-leadership begins with the desire to change oneself.

Once that process has begun, it then becomes possible to practice servant-leadership at an institutional level.

Tim and/or one of his colleagues are available to come out to your agency and give a presentation on this topic.
